Hands 06:33
I am a mouth A couplet lip I am a pair of hands A set of searching fingertips The fog of mourning Swallows me whole I am a fist I swing an empty bucket I wear a hollow weight The force of what to do with it The fog of mourning Swallows me whole Lose every detail In clouds that come And moons that grow I lean to touch the wall And my fingers take me by surprise The burst and breaking sight And I will see my own sighs I will use both my hands
2.
Strings 03:52
I hold you up to see my faded face Like a thinness shedding Skin and light I peel my red side And I’ve been bled out I’ve been bled out By the darkest beat On grey stone By the darkest heat You send a sparkler Sorrowed clicking contours We move on a dusty dance floor We’re sending strings between us See-saw towards our centres We are deserted And we deserve it By the darkest beat On grey stone By the darkest heat We’re sending sparklers You send me string and I will tie a web Between the two of us a fragile bed Open the ceiling and close the door I write my name in string across the floor You send me string and I will tie a web Between the two of us a fragile bed Tilt the blinds and I will close the door We write our names in silver on the wall You send me string and I will tie a web Between the two of us a fragile bed Tilt the blinds and I will close the door I write my name in string across the floor Tilt the blinds and I will close the door Tilt the blinds and I will close the door

Fortune 03:36
I don't believe in fortune And I don't believe in signs I don't believe that when I think of you You will have me in your eyes But I will betray my best intentions And I will sleep for there I am a legion Of concrete reason We write it in a sentence We burn crop circles in the hay We're both trouble And I knew it since you told me the date of your birthday So I will betray my best intentions And I will sleep for there I am a legion So I will betray my best intentions And I will sleep for there I am a legion Of concrete reason A buried basis Of shifting seasons A pleading treatise In brazen armour Some kind of Eden With flooded gardens

Curtains 04:58
My feet are fixed Petrified in pallid stone There is no air in here There is no air in here In sweating sheets I made the mistake of looking you in the eye There is no light in there There is no light in there And how I long to use my eyes again We tie each other down We pull the curtains shut We're bound in string cut from the rope that used to hold us up Shut out the light To stop the shaft of sun from showing The swirling dust Gathering around us With steady hands We weave silent spiderwebs We're setting traps We're setting traps to surround us And how I long to use my limbs again How I long to use my eyes again The sky outside is blue and used And every cloud blooms like a bruise I held a sign up through it all The weight I long for and abhor
5.
The Drink 04:14
Some of us are building houses Places where we say we live Cut the joke in half And then I'll buy myself a little prison I will not crash I'll buy a plot And be buried on my back I am a potential earner Swimming in potential sea Every day I drive my car Across the city Across the street I will not crash I'll buy a plot And be buried on my back I'll make a vow And tire but never take it back I'll work a job And wake up when the sky is black I'll buy a plot And be buried on my back Separate the gold from silver Hang it on a Christmas tree Let us saturate the future Here's to our dreams And our degrees
6.
Heavy/High 04:56
So suddenly I am appearing before the water falls There in front of me / The constant beating of footsteps in the hall So suddenly grey and blue in my morning eyes i see There in front of me, the city we built begin to sink In the space between our bedrooms / Dust uncovered Grey and purple plague we tried so hard to smother (How heavy and how high) Are these towers we are building They're built on faded light Are these towers we are building They're built on borrowed time Covered with a screen We mark each others' shadows scene by scene It's a cityscape / Both of our faces are unseen They're bending in the breeze of memory They're bending in the thought of what could be They're bending with the weight of urgency In the space between our bedrooms is a fire Grey and purple plague / We tried so hard to smother We stretch across a barren ocean This is how a bridge is broken
7.
Weighed down By the weight of metal Slowed down by the measure of a mile Concrete beneath A bed of leaves Make a bed of leaves Make a bed for me This is when I want to see the sky But I should be buried deep underground This is when I want to see the sky But I should be buried yes six feet down What's this all my pockets full Of heart-shaped stones the colour of Your pillow left the smell of you A galaxy Tell me this is what it was before
8.
Head To Toe 04:51
I've been burning up Giving the last of my flames away I have little left But lust for my best friends Tumbling from the foot I'm toppling, turning head to toe Lowering my eyes When I see the people I used to know I want to watch from miles away I wish we had a different way of doing things I am striped in light Struggling to make my fingers meet Shackled by the shade Our young backs show the first signs of ache I will tear my hear To find my hands are full of leaves I will take a bite To feel My mouth Swarm with bees I want to watch from miles away I wish we had a different way of doing things We're too Heavy To carry each other
9.
The Drought 01:58
The end of spring When flowers fall Is the closest we ever get to snow At least until it all turns brown A rotting rug on the footpath drowning A drought that floods my watery fears We collide upon revolving stairs Out of sense into nothing less Such a perfect stroke Such a swimming mess
10.
Body Back 04:52
I cannot say I want to explain The blow to my head The lines on my face It hollows me out It drums on my mind It hollows me out While it declines Give me my memory Show me how my heart beats Tell me how my eyes blink Without me asking them to Limbs that fall back And forth with the tide I pinch my own skin To feel these flesh-eating ties The buzz of the fly Won't leave me alone I suffer this ground And call it my own I will call my body back To its seat

about

Dear Time's Waste represents the ongoing sonic ruminations and verbose brown studies of Aucklander Claire Duncan.

Steeped in the gothic permanence of early Cure and the cloud-skipping gaze of Garlands era-Cocteau Twins, Some Kind Of Eden works in a playful orbit, dancing between the lightness and weight of experience with cold purpose and red desperation.

Recorded in isolation by Duncan between a cramped Eden Terrace flat and an expansive vacant studio space, the record follows on from 2010's LP Spells with a formidable sense of exactitude, a concrete precision echoed by the stringent monotony of electronic beats and pulsating textures in conversation with a malleable voice that surges and pulls with the demands of every instant.

A live show comprised of Duncan and compatriots allows the project a three-dimensional intensity, having been broken in by previous performances in support of such alt nobility as St. Vincent, Low and Deerhunter.
